| Close-up of axonal injuries. Electrical signals travel to the end of the axons, where chemical signals are released and move across the synapse to be received by receptors on the dendrites of the next nerve, becoming electrical signals again. The electrical signals that nerves carry are lost or decreased when axons suffer an injury. Some types of injuries include rotational injury, vascular edema in which increased blood and fluids in the brain cause swelling of the tissue, and metabolic injuries in which nutrients needed by the nerves are not provided. |
